Starting in 2006-2007 Riviera teachers began implementing Physical Education and more reading into the homework program during the  school year.

The finds of many current research studies point to the value of regular homework as part of the instructional program. Some benefits of homework are:

  • Increases in academic achievement
  • Increases opportunities for developing responsibility, self-discipline,and organizational skills
  • Extends the school experience or enriches a learning activity.

    In additional to these benefits to the student, homework assignments become an avenue for communication between home and school. Regular homework assignments provide parents with many opportunities to see how well their children are performing on academic tasks. They can also become much better acquainted with the actual content of the curriculum.

    Riviera’s homework policy is as follows:
    Homework shall be regularly assigned to students in order to provide essential practice in needed skills, promote individual responsibility, extend the school experience of students, and contribute to or enrich a learning activity.

    • Homework shall grow out of the instructional programs and be assigned regularly in accordance with the needs and abilities of students. Students in classes of all ability levels should be assigned homework.
    • Homework should be reasonable in the demands made on students’ time. Homework should be independent practice to reinforce skills previously taught in class.
    • Teachers will give informative feedback regarding homework assignments.
    • Homework assignments shall not be made for disciplinary purpose.
    • Parents shall be responsible for providing the opportunity for their children to complete homework assignments and are encouraged to cooperate with and to give support to teachers.
    • Time spent on homework will vary according to individual needs and abilities of the student.

       

      See the following TUSD board recommendation for homework:

      • K: Twenty to forty minutes per week
      • 1 – 3: One hour thirty minutes to two hours per week
      • 4 – 5: Three hours twenty minutes to four hours per week

        We know you want to become involved in your child’s educational program and give your support to your child’s efforts, so we would like to offer the following suggestions:

        • Find out from your child and your child’s teacher what the expectations and routines are concerning homework assignments.
        • Provide a quiet, well-lighted student area away from family activities and television where your child can concentrate.
        • Make some family rules about homework such as, “no after-dinner television until homework is completed,” and be consistent about enforcing them.
        • Give your undivided attention to discussing schoolwork with your child for a few moments each day so your child knows his performance in school is important to you. Make it a daily routine to ask your child if he/she has homework to do.
        • Help with homework briefly, if needed, but don’t do the work for your child.
        • If you don’t see homework assignments coming home, check with the teacher.
        • A backpack or book bag will help your child to be more efficient about getting his materials home and back. Be sure the student’s bag is permanently labeled with his or her name.
        • Parents are teachers too. There are many educational trips families can take—Zoo, Natural History Museum, California Missions that are a kind of homework. Reading literature with or to your child enriches their lives and also helps them do better in school. Anytime parents work with their children, asking them to think, do and talk about it, students are doing a kind of homework.
